(Lighter Than Light)
Presenting The Sveltest, Smoothest Gear
To Keep You At The Front Of The Pack.

Total Weight 1lbs, 12.4 oz

1. If that special someone is coming along, and stab-and-slurp dining isn’t going to cut it, pack a couple Snowpeak Titanium Sporks. That’s right, the KFC-endorsed multi-tasking utensil now comes in an über-chic matte-gray finish. Or, for maximum wooing, plan a menu of al fresco sushi and ditch the sporks for Snowpeak’s Titanium Chopsticks. Classy—and just 1 ounce per pair. $9 spork/$20 chopsticks; 503-697-3330; www.snowpeak.com.

2. When going light, a toothbrush, sleeping pad and underwear are all extravagances. Bracing, black coffee, on the other hand, is pure necessity. If you agree, get hold of the Snow Peak Titanium Café Press, a three-cup French Press that weighs a mere 6.3 ounces and doubles as a solo pot. A friend once ridiculed me for this lavish contraption only to fall into a fit of desirous blubbering after catching a whiff of my brew. What’s the best part of waking up now, partner? $50; 503-697-3330; www.snowpeak.com .

3. The Evernew Slick Nonstick Titanium Cookset is for ounce-counting backpackers with discriminating palates and sensitive hands. With 2- and 1.4-quart pots, plus matching lids that second as fry pans, you can wow your campmates with a four-pot feast of pan-fried trout, citrus-ginger demiglasse, sesame-seared collards and wine-braised shiitakes. (Be sure you pack the pots and your friends carry the food!) The built-in, plastic-coated handles prevent scorched fingers in those oh-shit-it’s-burning-where’s-the-pot-grabber moments. And the burly, nonstick coating makes cleanup quick. $95; 800-426-4840; www.rei.com .

4. The Apple iPod Shuffle gives you 20-odd CDs’ worth of music in a package just big enough to hold a half-dozen storm-proof matches. Humming along with Jack Johnson is definitely a safer way to while away the rainy hours in a tent than playing with chemically induced fire. Just make sure your tentmate is also plugged into a Shuffle before you really start belting it out. $99 for 520MB/$149 for 1GB; 800-692-7753; www.apple.com .

5. Regardless of what your size-matters trailmate insists, bigger isn’t always better. You’ll have whipped out your Leatherman Micra, fixed that loose screw and be well down trail while he’s still wrestling through the band saw and belt sander attachments on his tool. Packing a blade, scissors, three screwdrivers, a bottle opener and tweezers into a package not much bigger than fingernail clippers, the Micra’s all you need. For true minimalists, the scissors double nicely as a fork. $29; 800-847-8665; www.leatherman.com .
